Jett’s Wild Flight: Stowe, Vermont

By: Jett Lillie, 8/1/22

On this day we shopped downtown in Stowe and had fun with some ice cream. First, we had to find a parking spot. After we found a parking spot, we shopped at a bookstore. Jaycie found a book that when you open it, it has a secret compartment inside. My mom helped me pick out a birthday present for my dad which is coming up soon. Then we went home and ate lunch. Next, we went to Ben & Jerry’s Ice cream Factory and had a tour. We had some ice cream and learned how it was made too.

The last thing was the flavor graveyard!

I had fun in Vermont and can’t wait for new adventures.

Jaycie’s Bunny Hoppin’ News: Shopping & Ice cream!

By: Jaycie Lillie, 8/1/22

We went shopping in Stowe. I saw so many things that reminded me of people. There were lots of jams [like jelly] and Maple Syrup and things. There were very cute bee stuff and gnome salt shakers.

After shopping we headed off to Ben & Jerry’s Factory. They were booming with business [on a random Monday]. The line for ice cream was so long you had to cut through it to get to the door for the tour. It was better once we got inside.

We shopped a bit in the gift shop while we waited. They had bamboo spoons, patches, stickers, pencils, shirts, frisbees, key chains, and ice cream paper clips. They also had a few post cards which we bought. The cow bell rang! It was time for our tour. First, we watched a movie and then sampled cookie dough. The tour guide told us how the ice cream was made and then we got to sample a new flavor coming out called Sweet Cream & Cookies. [basically cookies & cream] It was pretty good. Our tour was over and we decided we had enough ice cream and come back not during the 3 o’clock rush. We didn’t want to wait 2 hours in line. I liked the graveyard of “dead” flavors, that died. [note, Ben and Jerrys ice cream place is haunted by ghost ice creams] That’s it. The end.

Jules’ Journal: Woodstock, Vermont

We woke up early and I packed the family a picnic lunch. We drove 1 hour 45 min. to the one and only National Park site in the state of Vermont: Marks-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park in Woodstock, VT.

It is also as we learned the oldest protected forest in the United States. We had a 10am tour of the Mansion on the property. It was absolutely gorgeous!

Front Entry:

Dining Room:

Front Porch overlooking his reforestation efforts:

Front of the house with the tallest Norwegian Spruce tree that George Marsh planted once he first made this his home. You only see about half of the tree - it's so tall!

We learned so much about how George Marsh & Frederick Billings were both conservationists & helped with the reforestation of the US. Mr. Billings’ granddaughter, Mary, ended up marrying Laurance Rockefeller and the homestead/farm was passed down to them. Both of which lead a life of legacy and stewardship. The history of this property was very interesting and the tour guide did a fantastic job! And the grounds (and forest) were beautifully manicured.

Even the Jr. Ranger booklets taught the kids the importance of living a life of good stewardship. Kids both earned a Jr Ranger badge and we learned they were harvested from wood right there in the park. Jett chose a maple wood badge and Jaycie chose a cherry wood badge. Both are beautiful, yet very different.

They also got “World Changer” booklets for Jr Rangers which they completed at home for a U.S. Mint Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller quarter. It was the perfect night for a fire, so we decided to grill rainbow trout (freshly caught and given to us from our neighbor’s), corn, and of course S’mores!

We had a beautiful sunset that night. Of course nothing we’ve seen compares to the Oklahoma Sunsets, but it at least reminded us of our beautiful home state.

We've enjoyed the last 3 days in Vermont. It's landscape of rolling green mountains and beautiful rivers has surely captured our hearts. So far, I dare to say this is the most beautiful state we've been in yet! But Maine is ahead... so we'll just have to wait and see!
